First released in the West on the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system, Star Ocean: First Departure R tells the story of a young swordsman, Roddick, and his companions, starting their journey to find Remedy for deadly disease, take part in adventure lasting through the big ocean.

From an undiscovered power, a new generation will be born.
The story begins on the original planet of Roak, where Roddick lives in the peaceful town of Kratus.
As a member of the local "Defense Force" village with the mission to protect the Kratus, Roddick learns about a mysterious disease that broke out in the neighboring town. Infected people turn to stone, but continue to live in a state of petrification.
Roddick, along with two friends Millie and Dorne, find their way to the neighboring town. Informed of the cure for the disease, they went to Mt. Metorx, where a healing herb is rumored to grow. When they reach the top, the party encounters Ronyx and Ilia, who appear before them in the light.
